The Governor has issued Executive Order 7S that gives towns the option to defer the due date of municipal taxes from July 1, 2020 to October 1, 2020 and/or reduce interest on past due taxes. On Thursday, April 16, 2020, the Easton Board of Selectmen approved the deferment program, as well as a lower interest option for those who do not qualify or apply for a deferral. The deferral program is available by application only and is for those who are able to show hardship.

At this time, the town is allowing payment of already delinquent taxes during the months of April, May, and June at the lower interest rate of .25% per month, as opposed to the customary 1.5% per month. However, once this time has passed, any interest owed on delinquent taxes will revert to the usual interest rate of 1.5% per month.

Taxpayers may obtain the application to defer their July 1, 2020 taxes, and submit to the Tax Office a completed form, along with proof of hardship. Those taxpayers approved for deferral will have their taxes become due and payable on or before October 1, 2020. Anyone who does not qualify or apply for this deferment, in the case that they are late on their July 1, 2020 payment, will have, for the months of July, August, and September, the ability to pay those delinquent taxes at the rate of .25%
per month, as opposed to 1.5% per month.

Applications for deferral should be submitted by mail, postmarked no later than July 1, 2020. Likewise, deferred tax payments will be due in office end of business day, or be postmarked, by October 1, 2020.

Please keep in mind that the town hall is presently closed to the public.

If you are not able to print an application, please contact our office, and we will mail you one. Our number is 203-268-6291, Ext’s. 140 and 141.

Completed applications should be returned by mail to:

Please note that real estate accounts in escrow and paid by a bank are not eligible for this program.

Respectfully,
