The first Board of Selectmen meeting of October included several appointments and the acceptance of two resignations.
The selectmen appointed three more members to the Easton Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. Adam Parker will serve as a full member. Elaine O’Keefe and June Logie will serve as alternate members of the task force. Their appointments now fill all available positions. Each of the seven members must be sworn in by the town clerk. First Selectman David Bindleglass will initiate the scheduling of the group’s first meeting, which is expected to happen before the end of October.
Devon Wible resigned her position as an alternate on the Board of Finance, effective Oct. 1. She resigned after being appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board of Education in August. The selectmen accepted Wible’s resignation and thanked her for her service to the Board of Finance and continued service to the Board of Education. Since Wible submitted her resignation on the same date as the Board of Selectmen meeting, the selectmen chose not to appoint a new Board of Finance alternate until after the vacancy is posted on the town website and made available to the public. The selectmen anticipate making the appointment at their next meeting.
The selectmen acknowledged the recent resignation of Vincent Caprio as the Republican Registrar of Voters, as well as his withdrawal from the November ballot for the position. Caprio cited health issues as the reason for his resignation. The selectmen thanked Caprio for his service to the town and wished him well. Tom Hermann, who was the Deputy Republican Registrar of Voters, will serve as acting Republican Registrar of Voters through the end of the current term. The Easton Republican Town Committee selected Dori Wollen as its candidate for Registrar of Voters for the November election. The RTC notified the state and took the necessary steps to make the change on the ballot.
Items mentioned during board member comment included:
- a plea for people to not tamper with or take election signs, but to respect each other’s views. There have been several instances in town where signs have gone missing or were damaged.
- congratulations to Beverlee and Alexander Dacey. They will be honored at The White House as part of the Fourth Annual Made in America showcase. Beverlee is the CEO of Amodex Products, which is based in Bridgeport.
- submission of a state grant application to make improvements to the intersection of Route 136 (Westport Road) and Center Road. The Department of Transportation connectivity grant would pay 100% of the construction costs. The town would only be responsible for design costs.
In addition, the selectmen approved several tax refunds as recommended by the tax collector as well as the release of two road opening and one driveway bond.
