Reception Is Friday, July 9, 7 to 9 p.m., Library Conference Room
An exhibit curated by the Easton Arts Council featuring the work of filmmaker, photographer and conservationist Tomas Koeck opens this week at the Easton Public Library.
Courier readers may know Koeck from his popular Sunday Nature Walk column and his many photographs published in the Courier. Koeck is a co-recipient of an Excellence in Journalism Award from the Society for Professional Journalists for his video of the 2020 Joel Barlow High School graduation ceremony.
Koeck first picked up a professional camera as a freshman in college in 2017 and has not been able to put it down since. He has described his camera as both an extension of his own mind and as a way to give a voice to those who don’t have one.
Most recently he has worked on a PBS Nature segment and a Smithsonian documentary while studying for his bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a concentration in journalism from the School of Communication, Media & the Arts at Sacred Heart University.
Although still just a rising college senior, Koeck has won several other awards for his creative work and environmental conservation efforts. His documentary short Sentinels of the Boreal won the award for “Most Meaningful” project at the SHU’s 2021 Academic Festival, at which it also took home the coveted “Campus Choice” award.
Koeck has also worked on several projects with the non-profit Vision Project, and his stories have been published in the National Audubon Society, the Connecticut Post, the Connecticut Audubon Society, ESPN, the Pulse, the Spectrum and many other outlets.
He also maintains collaborations with the National Audubon Society, the Loon Preservation Committee, the Boreal Conservation Committee, and has partnerships or sponsorships with TAMRON Optics USA, Canon USA, Milford Photo, and SHU’s College of Arts & Sciences. He is endorsed by the Connecticut Audubon as an ethical wildlife photographer.
Koeck’s exhibit runs from July 2 through July 31 at the Easton Public Library with an opening reception on Friday, July 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the library’s conference room.
