Good afternoon,
On Sunday I had the pleasure of lighting the Christmas Tree at the Easton Public Library. As we have seen at a number of town events this year there was a record turnout. This highlights the wonderful feeling of community in Easton and as a town we hope to find more ways to engage the people within our community.
We have definitely seen a worsening of the Covid numbers across the state. In Easton, we had 11 new cases for the week ending Dec. 4, for a per 100,000 rate of 17.1. Again, I would encourage people to wear masks in public, however will not mandate it. You can see the Covid daily date report for Easton here.
We had a productive meeting of the Board of Finance this week. Chairman Andy Kachele led a good discussion about possible uses for the federal money Easton is receiving from the American Rescue Act. While we continue to prioritize a new EMS headquarters, there may be other uses for these funds for pandemic related issues as well.
Some of the funds were approved to hire a consultant to assist us with the overall organization of our Emergency Services including staffing and communication. This had been a priority item for the Board of Finance for a number of years and they are glad to get it started. One area of particular focus for the consultant has to do with our capacity to respond to fires in the North End of town. Different areas of town are rated by ISO (Insurance Services Office) for the town’s ability to fight fires in the area. If we can take action to improve our rating there will be substantial savings to families in our northern part of town on their homeowner’s insurance.
Last Monday, the Park and Recreation commission meeting was chaired by Phil Tamallanca. After a number of years of service, Phil has decided to resign from the commission. This is one of the largest departments in town and Phil has done an amazing job of moving us forward providing some of the best programming around. Thank you to Phil for his service, I have personally enjoyed working with you.
