Memorial Day in Easton–Small Town America at Its Best

A glorious sunny day set the scene for a perfect mix of festivities and sober remembrances as over 1,000 Eastonites gathered to watch and march in the Memorial Day parade, and to remember the fallen in the ceremony at town hall that followed.

Parade favorites included the ever-popular stream of local tractors, vintage cars, members of Easton’s Police, Fire and EMS departments, schools, scout groups, and town officials. A Senior Center car and Irv Silverman’s tram filled with happy kids got lots of whistles and shout-outs.

But highest honors were reserved for Easton’s veterans to whom the day is dedicated. The focus of this year’s ceremony was a salute to our veterans of the Vietnam War. The featured speaker was Tony Unger, a Vietnam veteran, and past commander of American Legion Charles L. Ruman Post 160 in Easton.

The ceremony also included remarks to remind us all that “freedom does not come cheap,” and we must take a moment to remember all the men and women who lost their lives to give the rest of us the many freedoms we enjoy.
