DESCRIPTION:Greiser’s Coffee & Market is privileged to partner with Kit Briner\, the life partner of our friend Geri Gould\, to show and exhibit of the final series of Geri’s photography\, “Discovered Light.”\nGeri Gould received her first camera at age eight from her father\, Joe DiCuffa. He was a professional portrait photographer in New York City and provided a solid foundation of training and inspiration. Her photography has been exhibited and recognized by the Easton Arts Council\, Citizens for Easton\, Black Rock Art Guild at Burroughs Community Center\, Harborview Market and Framemakers Gallery. Fellow Easton artist Robert Brennan has described Geri’s work\, “Geri Gould was an artist who happened to use a camera. Like Claude Monet and so many other painters\, Geri was on a continuous and relentless search for the light\, and in the process\, she discovered the shadows\, thus starting a visual dialogue of elegance\, intrigue\, mystery\, and poetry.”\nAfter Geri passed away in January 2023\, Robert Brennan assisted Kit Briner in curating Geri’s this exhibit\, which will be on display from May 4 through late June. SUMMARY:Meet the Lawyer for Rosa Parks and MLK\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:The Easton DTC and Easton’s Inclusion and Diversity Task Force\, along with Berkshire Community College\, Williams College\, and Bard College invite you to join us for a conversation with civil rights hero Fred Gray\, a monumental icon of the movement. \nCongressman John Lewis called Fred Gray one of “the Founding Fathers of modern America.” \nIn 1958 Dr. King called him “the brilliant young Negro who later came chief counsel for the protest movement.” \nFred Gray opened his law practice in Montgomery\, Alabama in 1954 with the mission of “destroying everything segregated I could find.” One year later\, this rookie lawyer represented his friend Rosa Parks and Dr. King in the Montgomery Bus protests. That led to a career of landmark cases defeating segregation throughout Alabama\, including the Supreme Court case of Gomillion v. Lightfoot\, in which the Court rejected the racial gerrymandering of Tuskegee. \nIn his autobiography\, Bus Ride to Justice\, Gray also describes his representation of Claudette Colvin\, the 15-year-old who was arrested on a Montgomery bus nine months before Rosa Parks; his securing an acquittal of Dr. King by an all-white jury in Montgomery of criminal charges of tax evasion; his role in investigating the infamous “Tuskegee Syphilis Study” and securing compensation for the numerous victims; and many other historically significant matters. In this conversation\, you’ll hear Mr. Gray talk about the judge whom in 1958 he complimented for being a fair judge who treated him courteously\, and who went on to become the governor of Alabama–Governor George Wallace. \nMr. Gray will be interviewed by OLLI instructor and speaker Doug Mishkin\, himself a lawyer. OLLI is pleased to offer this 90-minute free program on Tuesday\, January 12\, 2021 at 6:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Central time. DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the National Day of Service on January 18\, 2021 right here in Easton\, CT! \nThe National Day of Service for the Inauguration of President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will celebrate and honor the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 18\, 2021. The National Day of Service is an opportunity for all Americans to unite and serve at a time when the global pandemic calls on all of us to work together and support our communities. \nThe Easton Democratic Town Committee has chosen to nourish positive energy and support folks right here in Easton. Join us as we help our neighbors by donating to the Easton Food Pantry. \nHere are a couple of ways to make a difference: \n1) GATHER YOUR NON-PERISHABLES STARTING 1/18\nThe Food Pantry needs to stock the shelves with the items below… \n– Cans of Soup\n– Canned Fruit\n– Canned Vegetables\n– Jars of Peanut Butter (preferably plastic)\n– Jars of Jelly (preferably plastic)\n– Jars of Spaghetti Sauce (preferably plastic)\n– Pasta\n– Flavored Rice Packets (the all in one side dishes kind) \n2) RE-STOCK THE EASTON FOOD PANTRY ON 1/19 (OR BY APPOINTMENT) \nBring your items to Municipal Agent\, Alison Witherbee’s office in the Easton Senior Center on 1/19. She will be in her office from 8:30AM to 3:30PM\, and standard Covid-19 precautions will be taken (mask required\, temperature will be taken\, and sign in as well). \nThe food donation drive will help to supplement the senior grocery bags that are delivered weekly and help any families who are facing hard times. Alison will also accept Shop-Rite or Stop & Shop gift cards\, as they are more popular with the families who have to shop. You may arrange a time for drop offs with her that week\, if 1/19 doesn’t work with your schedule. \n3) DRIVERS ARE NEEDED \nIf you would like\, a donation of your time would also be appreciated. You can help to deliver the bags of groceries next week. SUMMARY:Best Lives Book Club - NEW!
DESCRIPTION:This book club aims to begin a discussion around how we achieve happiness\, success\, and finding a purpose in life that is unique to us. Starting with the theme of self-compassion\, we’ll explore the societal expectations that drive us\, common misconceptions\, and some of the very real negative outcomes worth avoiding. It will also offer parents lots of great ideas for helping kids along the way. This book club is also being held at the Mark Twain Library in Redding and residents are welcome to participate in either club. The times and dates will differ from those offered at the Easton Library. \nThis month’s title is Educated by Tara Westover. Registration is required.
