SUMMARY:60 Annual Mark Twain Library Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:Over 65\,000 books for sale organized in 75 categories! The Mark Twain Library Book Fair is the oldest – and one of the largest – in New England. The library was founded by Samuel Clemens – Mark Twain\, himself – in 1908. Twain moved to Redding in 1907 and had more books than would fit in his new home. He donated thousands of his own titles to help get the library started; today\, over a century later\, the Book Fair raises the funds to keep his library thriving. \nThis year’s highlights include an assortment of books by Mark Twain\, an extensive collection of classical LPs from a radio host’s personal library\, many classic novels translated into Dutch\, a special leatherette bound collection of Louis L’Amour novels\, a wide-ranging collection of plays\, poetry\, and literature translated into Hungarian\, an incredible selection of geography books\, a large collection of beautifully illustrated children’s Bible stories\, an extensive collection of foreign language books for children\, and childhood treasures published mainly before 1985. \nLocation: Redding Community Center\, 37 Lonetown Road (Route 107)\, Redding\, CT (behind Redding Elementary School) \nHours: Friday\, Sept. 3 9a-6p\nSaturday\, Sept. 4 10a-4p\nSunday\, Sept. 5 10a-4p (half-price day)\nMonday\, Sept. 6 9a-4p ($10 for a box of books) \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Discover Documentaries: Featuring Cindy Meehl Films - 3 Time Emmy Nominated "Rewind"
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for this unique opportunity to meet award-winning director and producer\, Cindy Meehl of Redding and gain personal insight into her documentaries. Over the course of several months\, we will view three of Cindy’s documentaries on our own time\, then meet virtually to discuss them with her and a special guest involved in each of her films. This month watch 3 time Emmy nominated Rewind on your own time\, available to view free on Hoopla and on Amazon Prime. Then we’ll gather on Zoom for discussion and Q&A with Cindy and Sasha Joseph Neulinger\, director and main subject in the documentary. \nIn the documentary Rewind\, we learn that director Sasha Joseph Neulinger’s father is constantly filming. But his father’s camera\, trained on the celebrations and frequent gatherings of a tight-knit family\, was also documenting a hidden secret. It was a secret that eight-year-old Sasha could not keep. The truth sparked a media firestorm\, a high-stakes court battle\, and a generational reckoning. As an adult\, Neulinger drew upon a revealing home video archive to piece together a story of the cycles and consequences of abuse\, to examine what it means to heal and to effect positive change in the world. Rewind probes the gap between image and reality\, showing both how little\, and how much\, a camera can capture. \nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Our Common Ground: Insights From Listening to American Voters
DESCRIPTION:Author book discussion\, in person and on ZOOM\, 11:30 AM. \nHow do we talk with each other about politics? How can we really hear what each other is saying and engage with civility and understanding? How far apart are we really in how we see the world? \nPlease join award-winning CEO and writer Diane Hessan as she shares with us her research on this timely issue\, as captured in her new book Our Common Ground. After talking with 500+ voters from different sides of the aisle\, monthly\, since 2016\, Hessan will help us navigate our times by sharing her research and implications for all of us moving forward. As Amazon shares in its review: “After more than a million individual communications\, two things became clear: We have more common ground than we realize. And we are\, sadly\, failing at understanding each other.” \nHessan will speak in the main building of the Unitarian Church in Westport\, 10 Lyons Plains Rd\, after the 10 AM service on Sunday. Ours is a big and inclusive community: all – of all political stripes and opinions – are welcome. Masks required. The building has multiple side glass walls that will remain open for fresh air and ventilation. \nWe will broadcast this event on our worship ZOOM link and will moderate discussion online as well as in person. See www.uuwestport.org for Sunday ZOOM info. \nPlease feel free to invite friends and family; the more the merrier! Questions? Contact Beth Cliff at beth@uuwestport.org or call at 203.227.7205 x 16.

SUMMARY:Conversations: Truth\, Myth & Democracy - An Evening of Discussion w/ Dr. Yuval Levin & Dr. William Galston\, Moderated by WCSU's Dr. Daniel Barrett
DESCRIPTION:The Mark Twain Library and the Redding League of Women Voters are proud to present the third installment of our series “Conversations: Truth\, Myth & Democracy” with Dr. Yuval Levin of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and Dr. William Galston of the Brookings Institution\, moderated by Western Connecticut State University’s Dr. Daniel Barrett. This virtual discussion is between two noted social and political thinkers who will examine the causes and consequences of a divided America and explore how a revival of some of the principles of our political tradition can contribute to solving our national challenges. \nThe Conversations series is a grassroots effort that continues to examine the underlying meaning of our democracy and how democracy matters even when we have different ideas about what it should look like. The focus is on addressing the difficult issues of truth telling and myth busting by bringing much-needed community conversations to help promote education\, informed dialogue and civil discourse. The series is brought to you in association with Easton Public Library\, Newtown’s C.H. Booth Library\, Ridgefield Library\, Weston Public Library\, The League of Women Voters of Ridgefield and the League of Women Voters of Northern Fairfield County.

SUMMARY:Lead Like A Pro - A Workshop for Youth Coaches and Parents
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for this unique opportunity to learn from author\, coach and athletic director\, Dr. Matthew Raidbard. With each passing year youth sports coaches are asked to take on increased leadership responsibilities for their athletes and team. However\, they don’t always have the opportunity to receive the necessary coach-related leadership education and training that would provide them with the knowledge and tools required to effectively coach the team\, manage the athletes and parents\, and deal with any unexpected conflicts or tensions that arise during the season. This talk is designed specifically for youth sport coaches to provide them with foundational leadership knowledge and teach them techniques they can use to practice the best leadership style and behaviors that align with their personal values and beliefs. \nDuring this program\, Dr. Raidbard will give an introduction to leadership practice\, and discuss the importance of coaches viewing themselves as leaders and making intentional leadership choices. He will also talk about how coaches can determine what the best leadership style and behaviors are for them to practice based on their personal values and beliefs. This program is also designed to help coaches understand the impact their leadership choices can have both positively and negatively on the athletes they coach. \nDr. Raidbard is the author of the newly released book Lead Like A Pro: Effective Leadership Styles for Athletic Coaches. In Lead Like A Pro\, he draws on over a decade spent as a college basketball coach and senior level athletics administrator\, as well as his own original research into what leadership styles and behaviors help athletic coaches be successful. This practical\, yet informative book provides coaches with the resources to transform their leadership practice and reach their full potential.

SUMMARY:Special Film Screening - Screenagers: Growing Up In A Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special free virtual screening of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in a Digital Age. Are you watching kids scroll through life\, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. \nIn SCREENAGERS\, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health\, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life\, including her own\, to explore struggles over social media\, video games\, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant\, and unexpectedly funny stories\, along with surprising insights from authors\, psychologists\, and brain scientists\, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. \nThe screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Dr. Delaney Ruston\, physician and filmmaker. \nThis evening is brought to you in partnership by the Redding Elementary School\, John Read Middle School and Joel Barlow High School PTAs\, Easton K-8 PTO and the Mark Twain Library.
