The Easton Public Library and the Easton Garden Club are teaming up with a prospective Eagle Scout to create two mobile carts that will house a Sensory Garden. Toni Erian, a member of BSA Troop 306 of Redding, approached the Easton Garden Club about doing a project. Since the Garden Club and the Library had already planned to partner on creating a mobile sensory garden, the timing was perfect.
Toni, who is a junior at the Wooster School in Danbury, will be responsible for designing the carts, as well as acquiring the materials needed. She met several times with Jean Stetz-Puchalski of the Easton Garden Club and Library Director Lynn Zaffino to discuss the details of the project. It was decided that two separate carts of different heights will be constructed, so that the lower garden cart can be wheelchair-accessible.
After Toni constructs the carts, the Easton Garden Club will choose the plants that will be contained in the Sensory Garden. The objective of the project is to choose a diverse group of plantings that will appeal to four of the five senses (touch, smell, sight, and sound) and will be accessible to all.
Some of the funding for the project comes from a donation that was gifted to the Library last year. This donation was made in memory of a friend who was an Easton landscaper. The donor asked that the funds be used towards a gardening project, books, or programs.
The carts are expected to be completed by the beginning of the summer, at which time the planting will occur. The Library is planning a public unveiling in early-mid September.
