Ukraine Aid International will host a one-night benefit screening of the documentary Second Wind on May 18 at Fairfield Theatre Company. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., the film begins at 7 p.m., and a Q&A session with writer and producer Gennadiy Gazin will immediately follow.
The film follows five wounded Ukrainian veterans, including four soldiers with lower-leg prosthetics and a severely injured female sniper, as they attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, highlighting themes of resilience, recovery and determination in the aftermath of war.
Organizers said the documentary focuses on strength and dignity rather than loss, offering a human-centered narrative intended for a broad audience, including older children.
The event reflects the group’s ongoing mission to support Ukrainians beyond immediate crisis response, emphasizing long-term recovery and community-based aid efforts.
The screening holds added significance in Fairfield and Easton, which have sister-city partnerships with cities in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Organizers said such partnerships demonstrate tangible, community-level solidarity.
Internationally, the film has been shown at limited, invitation-only events in cities including Washington, New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Brussels, as well as at NATO headquarters and the European Parliament.
