Local Groups Easton Pride and Easton’s Here to Help Offer Assistance and Support for Families in Need

Several local groups say that resources and support are available to help them respond to recent actions affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Easton Pride and Easton’s Here to Help, (EHTH), both partner with the Triangle Community Center in Norwalk, which offers free peer support groups, recovery groups and youth and young adult group programs along with others.

“I want people to know that there are resources, there are people out there who love them and care for them as they are, and they are deserving of every single right as everybody else out there,” said Hilary Desmond, a member of Easton Pride.

The offer is in response to recent actions taken in Washington regarding LGBTQ+ community, transgender youth and their families.

Sarah Lehberger, co-chair of EHTH, said that she has received a few private messages from local families who are “concerned for their LGBTQ+ youth’s mental and physical health as well as their safety.

“This affects families across the country, who are experiencing discrimination and most are faced with losing vital healthcare for their children,” she said.

EHTH also partners with Our Trans Life which serves the Greater Bridgeport region and fosters inclusiveness and advocates for gender-diverse communities. These resources are safe spaces for youths, adults and families.

Desmond said it is important to speak up and speak loud to show the local Board of Education, the Board of Finance and the Board of Selectmen that LGBTQ+ and transgender youth must be respected.

“If you do see something happening, or you do have concerns, or you see someone who needs support, you need to speak up and offer that support, especially if you see someone being targeted,” said Desmond.

Advocacy groups such as Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union are available to keep LGBTQ+ members informed of their rights.

“If confirming legal parentage rights for your LGBTQIA+ family, or family member, is the concern, resources such as GLAD or GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders are important to follow,” said Lehberger.
