October marks National Fire Safety Month, and this year the focus is on a growing concern found in nearly every household: the safe use of lithium-ion batteries. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has launched its annual campaign under the slogan “Charge Into Fire Safety,” aiming to raise awareness about the potential dangers of these powerful yet volatile energy sources.
Easton Fire Marshal Schuyler Sherwood emphasized the urgency of the issue, noting the sharp rise in fires linked to lithium-ion batteries.
“It is critical that we all learn more about the safe use and care of lithium-ion batteries because fires caused by these batteries have increased dramatically with deadly consequences,” Sherwood said.
Lithium-ion batteries are used in a wide variety of everyday devices from phones, laptops, and tablets to e-scooters, power tools and lawn equipment. While convenient and efficient, these batteries pose unique risks. If they become damaged, overcharged, or exposed to high temperatures, they can overheat, spark, or even explode, leading to serious injuries and property damage.
Sherwood also reminded residents to take advantage of Fire Safety Month to perform basic home safety checks. “October is the perfect time to make sure every home has working smoke detectors in each bedroom, one in every common area and carbon monoxide detectors on every floor,” he said.
