Independent Party Chairman Chip Beckett announced the endorsement of incumbent state Senator Tony Hwang. Following a lengthy application and nomination process, the party’s state central committee chose Hwang as its nominee for the 28th State Senate District, representing Bethel, Easton, Fairfield, and Newtown. With this endorsement, Hwang will appear on an additional ballot line this election.

“Tony is always focused on solutions and ideas to make the world a better place for everybody,” said Beckett. “The Connecticut Independent Party is focused on solutions and centrist ideas to represent the 60 to 70% of the people in the middle who are not happy with either extreme. We are really happy to endorse Tony.”
Hwang has historically held the Independent Party line up until the last cycle in 2022 when the party made the unexpected decision to support his opponent. Hwang believes this year’s endorsement “demonstrates the party’s recommitment to centrism and community representation. Despite the national rancor and extreme partisanship that is seeping into our state, the Connecticut Independent Party offers balance and trust to the electorate.”
Beckett ended his remarks at a recent press conference by reflecting on his personal experience with Hwang’s leadership: “There was real hard work after Newtown happened, and the gun violence prevention laws that passed in the 2010s. When I was chairman of the Glastonbury Town Council, like Fairfield, we had to talk about hardening the school infrastructure, but we also needed state laws and funding to make that happen, and Tony helped deliver that. So rather than a shady TV commercial, I hope people remember the hard work that he has done on that and a number of other issues that represent the vast majority of Connecticut citizens. With that, Tony has our wholehearted endorsement.”
Hwnag expressed his gratitude for the endorsement. “I am thankful for the Independent Party’s endorsement and recognition of my experience, trust and legislative achievement I’ve delivered for the constituents of my district. I’m hopeful for the renewed commitment toward centrist and community principles the party was founded on, by leaders like Chip Beckett and Lisa Brinton. By listening to all stakeholders, we can best represent and advocate for our communities in the state legislature, and then finally deliver common-sense collaborative solutions to the complex problems facing Connecticut.”
