If you are traveling on Route 15, which runs from the New York-Connecticut border to East Hartford, you will begin to notice temporary stickers on overhead signs indicating new exit numbers that are being changed by the Connecticut Department of Transporation (CTDOT).

That stretch includes the scenic Merritt Parkway, which will have exit renumbering only, and the Wilbur Cross Parkway, which will get signs and sign supports.

These new exits and sign supports are being installed in accordance with the latest federal and state standards and guidelines, which require exit numbers to be revised from the existing sequential numbering to mileage-based numbering. For drivers in Fairfield, Exit 46 is now Exit 28, Exit 44 is now Exit 27, and Exit 42 is now Exit 21.

“The federal requirement did not have a deadline, so CTDOT is renumbering exits at the same time all of the signs along that corridor reached the end of their useful life and needed to be replaced,” said Eva Zymaris, a spokesperson for the CTDOT. The full renumbering project will continue through 2030, with Interstates 84 and 95 next in line.

“Both old and new exit numbers will be displayed to help drivers adjust, and GPS providers are being notified to update their systems accordingly,” she said. “We expect minimal impact to traffic during this process.”

State Sen. Tony Hwang said the change will help emergency responders locate incidents more efficiently using mileage‑based references. He noted that the project coincides with ongoing infrastructure enhancements funded by federal and state funds. “Roadway safety isn’t just about enforcement and laws,” he added, “but education and creating awareness and creating an infrastructure that avoids tragedy.”

Zymaris said it is important to note that the signs will be replaced over the next year.
