The following update from First Selectman David Bindelglass was posted to the town’s website this morning:

Good morning.

Many of you are probably aware of the warning issued to the City of Danbury from the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Over a recent 18-day period Danbury reported 178 new cases. Contact tracing revealed that the origin of this spike came from travelers coming into town. We have stressed the state’s advisory not to travel to affected states which are listed on the state website, www.ct.gov/coronavirus.

If you feel that you ABSOLUTELY MUST travel to one of these states then you are required to quarantine for 14 days upon your return. There are civil penalties of up to $1000 for not quarantining. Let me be perfectly clear. Self-quarantine is a mitigation strategy to decrease risk. It is not a way to make up for taking on unnecessary risk.

The only GOOD strategy is not to go to an affected state in the first place. Danbury is obviously very close to Easton, and even closer to Redding for our Barlow families. Easton has done so well and our people have been so responsible. The next few weeks are a time for extreme caution.

As always, wear a mask, social distance and wash your hands. Let us remain where we have been throughout the pandemic: a model for how to “Do it right.”

Thank you.

Dave Bindelglass
