A pair of Easton Girl Scouts are on their journey to complete their Silver Award with a project of bringing a “take-a-book, leave-a-book” Little Lending Library to the New Friends Playground right here in Easton.

Easton Girl Scouts Makeda Is Ra El Ali Bey, 14, and Kaete Weinseiss, 14, are rising freshmen members of Girl Scout Troop #31490. Makeda recently graduated from eighth grade at Helen Keller Middle School and Kaete graduated from Easton Country Day School. The Silver Award is the second highest award given by Girl Scouts. Both girls said they enjoy being part of the Girl Scouts, citing the opportunities to learn, experience new adventures (like primitive camping) and trying out new things as highlights.

They decided to bring the Little Lending Library to Easton earlier this year. Kaete saw a Lending Library at a Monroe playground and wondered why there wasn’t one here in Easton. With so many young children and young parents at the New Friends Playground, she and Makeda thought it would be another great way to bring the Easton community together and spread their love of reading to younger children.

The Easton Park & Recreation Department installed the Little Lending Library at the New Friends Playground this month.

Allowing children to share their books with others will allow them to see — in a very literal manner — how the act of reading connects people to other readers in meaningful ways. And isn’t that what reading is all about?

To raise money to buy, assemble, decorate and weather-proof the Lending Library, Makeda and Kaete built out a “Kindness Rocks” fundraiser whereby kids of all ages painted rocks with inspirational messages to put around the Lending Library and add more reading fun.

Kaete and Makeda held several rock-painting events, and all rocks will be displayed. The Grand Opening Ceremony will be scheduled for later this summer (after the girls finish their summer camp), but the Easton Park & Recreation Department installed Makeda and Kaete’s Little Lending Library this month. Bring a book. Take a book. And share more books around the Easton community!
