‘Jonah and the Whale’ Children’s Performance at UU Westport and ZOOM

The Children’s Choir of the Unitarian Universalist congregation in Westport is pleased to offer its adaptation of Pote and McCann’s musical about Jonah and the Whale, on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.

The program will be the main part of the Sunday worship service, replacing the minister’s homily/sermon. All are welcome for this wonderful, fun retelling of a religious classic from the Bible’s Old Testament that has lessons for our modern world.

The music, costumes, props (yes, that whale does open its jaws!) and scripts are entertaining and compelling. A treat for the whole family. Young children are encouraged to sit in the front rows or on the floor so they can see and hear all the action. Masks required for performers and congregants.

Also available to watch on ZOOM; see our website, uuwestport.org, for Sunday ZOOM link.

Some Biblical stories are so large, so important that they have been referenced in many literary and dramatic works. It’s important for our children to know what those stories are and why they have withstood the test of time. The Jonah story is rich in meaning: some of its themes include self worth, dignity, narcissism and the undisciplined mind, the importance of community, and responsibility.

To refresh our memories, recall that Jonah has a lot happening in his life: storms, ill-fated boat rides, living inside a whale, experiencing loneliness, encountering the nasty Ninevites, listening to his angels. In the end Jonah faces his deepest fears and reforms the Ninevites in the process. We’ll hear a lot of songs from all quarters.

Come see and hear how Jonah copes with it all. Meet the whale, the sailors, the Ninevites and hear what the angels have to say.

The Children’s Choir has been working on this for several months. They will be wearing masks and we ask our attendees to as well. See you there!
