A Gate Ridge Road resident alerted the police earlier today that she observed a vehicle pull up to her mailbox and remove mail that was waiting to be picked up by the letter carrier. Within three minutes another call was received from a Virginia Drive resident who observed a male exit a vehicle and throw mail into a storm drain. Easton Officers arrived but were unable to locate the vehicle. Area police departments were notified.

Some mail has been recovered from the storm drain with the assistance of the Easton Public Works Department. The Easton police are in the process of notifying the victims. Police Chief Richard Doyle indicated that these individuals are looking for cash and checks. The value and payee can be changed through a process called “check washing.”

Chief Doyle is urging residents to refrain from leaving outgoing mail in their mailboxes with the flag up as this may encourage continued thefts.

To report any additional incidents the Easton Police Department is located at 700 Morehouse Road, Easton, CT 06612, 203-268-4111, EastonCT.gov.
