A reminder from the Easton Energy & Environment Task Force that starting Jan. 1 the deposits on redeemable bottles and cans increased to 10 cents. The new deposits apply to beer, soda, and bottled water as always, plus juice, sports drinks, and energy drinks, among others.
When you return your empty (and rinsed) bottles and cans to stores and self-service machines, you will now get 10 cents back for each item. While you can still place these items in your curbside recycling bin, the glass, plastic, and aluminum collected through redemption tends to be less contaminated and therefore is considered higher value for recycling markets. If you don’t want to redeem them yourself, you can always donate them to the Easton Emergency Medical Service, which has a collection bin behind their building on Sport Hill Road.
Visit the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection website for more information on the state’s new bottle bill.
