The Easton Cemetery Committee will host a lecture by Keith Stokes on April 30 as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary commemoration.
Stokes, Rhode Island’s historian laureate, will present “Creative Survival: African Heritage Enslavement & Freedom in Early New England” at 7 p.m. in the Helen Keller Middle School cafetorium, 360 Sport Hill Road.
He serves as director of the Rhode Island Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and has held advisory and board roles with numerous preservation and historical organizations, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society. His media appearances include C-SPAN, Fox News’ “Legends & Lies,” TED Talk and the PBS series “Black and Jewish in America.”
A $15 donation is suggested. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
