As part of the fourth annual Keep Kids Safe Campaign, the Easton Police Department is hosting a Gun Safe Giveaway Day on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is aimed at promoting firearm safety for the community.  It will take place in the police department lobby, where residents will have the opportunity to receive a free gun safe for securing their firearms.

The Gun Safe Giveaway Day aims to promote firearm safety for the community.

The police department has emphasized that in order to obtain a gun safe, participants must present a valid pistol permit. A limited supply of free pin code gun safes will be available.

The Keep Kids Safe campaign was established in 2019 by the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation and the Ethan Miller Song Foundation as an educational program for parents, educators and healthcare professionals. The campaign seeks to reduce unintentional shootings, suicides and homicides among children; to provide gun safes to gun owners; and promote community gun buyback opportunities.

In addition to Easton, other nearby towns, including Bridgeport, Norwalk, Danbury, and Newtown, will participate in the giveaway, holding their events at different times throughout the day.

The event emphasizes safe storage of firearms to keep guns from getting into the wrong hands, such as children, individuals who may be facing a mental health crisis, people with dementia, perpetrators of domestic violence, and criminals.
