Photo Gallery: Veterans Day Celebrated at Helen Keller Middle School

The annual Helen Keller Middle School Veterans Day Celebration was held on Nov. 12.

“This year HKMS was honored to have fifteen veteran guests from VFW Trumbull Post 10059 join our two veterans on the Keller staff to educate our students on the challenges, trials, and benefits of military service,” said HKMS School Principal Steven Clapp.

The day started with a moving ceremony recognizing these heroes, while one of the students received a recognition of his own.  Sixth-grader William was recognized for his Patriot Pen VFW essay entitled “My Voice in American Democracy,” in which he said, “I am empowered to use my knowledge about human rights and citizenship to do my part to improve society and I am motivated to help others share their voices, so that we are all happy with at least some aspect of it and willing to compromise.” 

The veterans were then escorted to classes where they spent the morning talking about their call to duty, training they went through, places they served, people they helped and the lessons they learned. In addition to this program honoring veterans, the students in the school’s Peer Leaders group organized, wrapped, filled and packed more than 30 care packages that will be sent to active military service members overseas this December holiday season as part of the 300 Boodle Brigade care package program.
