A new U.S. Postal Service mailbox has been sitting between the Easton Public Library and Town Hall since Nov. 14 but many residents still don’t know it exists.

The mail box’s arrival comes after years of complaints about traffic backups, limited parking and long waits at the town’s only other mailbox, located at the Post Office near Greiser’s Coffee & Market.

“I heard talk around town about another mailbox,” said Valerie Buckley, Easton Senior Center’s director. “People have been saying we are getting one for a while.”

Eighteen months ago to be exact. That’s when Selectman Nick D’Addario contacted U.S. Rep. Jim Himes’ office to formally request a second mailbox. The request moved through federal channels and was approved in July 2024, though installation was delayed by the pace of federal timelines and the recent government shutdown.

“I talk to residents all the time in my role as selectman, and it’s something that had come up a few times,” said D’Addario. “My belief is that we can find small things to help our residents with their quality of life.”

Town officials evaluated several possible locations for the new mailbox, including Helen Keller Middle School, the Senior Center and library. Because Town Hall and the library sit directly across from one another and offer accessible parking, the site ultimately became the preferred choice.

The new mailbox was initially placed beside the Easton Public Library, but after a recommendation from the police chief, it was moved a short distance next to the town’s ballot drop box.

Buckley said she’s glad to see an additional mailbox in town, especially after a recent incident involving her mail.

“I’ve had two checks go missing recently, and someone took them,” she said. “Because of that, I don’t like putting important mail in my own mailbox anymore.”

The new mailbox also eases pressure on the Post Office parking lot, where customers picking up packages or checking P.O. boxes often occupy spaces longer.

But D’Addario acknowledged that many residents haven’t realized it’s there.

“Go and use it at your leisure, and hopefully it makes life a little bit better,” said D’Addario.
