Eastonites have already voted in record numbers, casting an unprecedented number of absentee ballots and turning out at the polls for Election Day 2020.
As of as of 3:30 p.m., the total number of votes cast, either absentee or in-person, was 4,434 out of 5,715 active registered voters. That’s 77.5% of registered voters with more than four hours to go. By comparison, 80% of the electorate turned out for the 2016 election.
By 5:30 p.m., absentee ballots were described as “unchanged” with 1,703 tabulated, and in-person votes reached 2,969 for a total of 4,672. That’s 81.7%, which surpassed the 2016 turnout.
Theresa Lomax, 57, and Anne-Marie Logan, 84, voted in person in the morning. “It’s important to vote. No matter what side,” was their message.
Local officials said long lines of voters moved quickly and everyone indoors wore masks. Two people were spotted on the side of the building without masks, but they were outside the polls.
Everything was proceeding in an orderly fashion as of late this afternoon.
