An officer was dispatched to the area of Center Road and Route 59 Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in response to a report of a motor vehicle that had driven off the road. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer observed a sport utility vehicle had come to rest on an embankment in the Easton Fire Department parking lot and had struck a tree head-on.
The driver, later identified as John David Griffin, had failed to negotiate a proper left turn onto Center Road while traveling northbound on Route 59, police said. Tire marks emanating from the vehicle indicated that it traveled in a semi-circle on the grassy green for a length of approximately 280 feet. The vehicle then traveled across Center Road, driving over an embankment with bushes on the firehouse property.
The vehicle then became airborne and struck a tree that was located on an embankment bordering the firehouse parking lot. The officer stated that he could smell an odor of alcohol emanating from Griffin, who appeared disoriented and was slurring his words. Griffin refused to perform any field sobriety tests or submit to a breath test; he also declined to call a lawyer, police said.
Griffin was released to a co-worker after posting a $40 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 20 to answer the following charges:
- Failure to Drive Right
- Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
