Having the bulk of first-place finishes put the Joel Barlow High girls track team in good position at its final home meet of the season last week.

The Falcons won 11 events on May 7. Often having multiple scorers in events also put them far ahead of the competition, as they routed Masuk 113-36, New Fairfield 117-32 and also beat Bunnell 91-59.
Dominating all three relays, the Falcons won each, starting with the 4×800 meters early in the meet. Isabelle Wildgoose, Katie Kinyon, Mia Tartaglia and Clara Mehner beat their closest challengers by nearly a minute in 11 minutes, 13 seconds.
They also had enough speed in the 4×100, with Vika Abukhovich, Sedonia Holub, Jenna Najjar and Jordan Carr winning in 49.9.
Bunnell was fast in the 100-meter high hurdles, taking two of the top three sports. Phoebe Cora Smith earned Barlow’s points here in 16.7, good for second. She went on to win the 300 intermediate hurdles in 49.7.
Najjar won two sprinting events, taking the 100 in 12.8 and the 200 in 25.8, both personal records. She led a sweep of the latter events with Abukhovich taking second in 26.5 (personal record) and Holub getting third in 27 seconds flat.
Two top-three finishes went to Barlow in the 1,600. Olivia Kotula’s 5:29.6 (personal record) was second only to New Fairfield’s Katie McMorrow. Ally Bardani was third in 5:40.5 (personal record). They took the same two places in the 3,200, with Kotula finishing in 12:26.2 and Bardani in 13:07.
Although the Falcons did not place in the top three in the 400, they went one-two in the 800. Sydney Borofsky led the way in 2:24.7 and Mehner was next a tenth of a second later, both personal records.
Making it a sweep of the relays Holub, Smith, Abukhovich and Najjar ran a 4:12.4
Wildgoose would place in three field events, including the shot put, which she won with a toss of 28 feet, two inches, a personal record. She had another personal record in the discus with 76’ 1.5, taking second behind Bunnell’s Kayla Johnson. Competing in the javelin, Wildgoose took third with a throw of 69’ 10”.
Carr also had a big day in the field events with three victories. Clearing 12 feet in the pole vault, she was five feet higher than her closest challenger.
In the long jump, she leaped 17’ 3”, another first place and a personal record. She totaled 34’ 8.5” to win the triple jump and Ruby Candee also scored for the Falcons with 41’ 2.5”, her longest distance this season.
Barlow is now 9-1 overall.
