As the regular season winds down, the Joel Barlow High girls tennis team continues to make short work of the competition.

The Falcons, one of several teams in the hunt for a spot in the South-West Conference playoffs, made short work of a couple of opponents last week, posting two shutouts. The first came against Stratford on Monday, May. 6. Dominating their opponent, they lost only a single game in a 7-0, sweep at home.

Three of the singles matches resulted in identical 6-0, 6-0 shutouts. In the number one spot, Anya Kumar made short work of Victoria Vanquez.

Gabby Krzewicki did likewise to Kathnie Fabre at second singles. At third singles, Victoria Flishenbaum swept Peggy Boateng.

Completing the sweep of singles, Barlow’s Abby Dedaj surrendered just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sofia Barrios.

Barlow also dominated the doubles matches, taking all of them by 6-0, 6-0 scores. First doubles players Maya Zubrinsky and Carolyn Hopstaken prevailed over Ashly Amador and Lily Flockhart.

At second doubles, Sarah Ballas and Sylvia Calemmo swept Daniella Paisley and Margaret LaReav. Chloe Gustavson and Kristina Stranik did likewise to beat Sabrina Bouvier and Nyasia Curry.

Barlow’s match at Notre Dame of Fairfield two days later was only slightly more competitive. The Lancers managed to win a few games in two of the contests before the Falcons prevailed in another 7-0 sweep.

Notre Dame gave the Falcons the most competition at first singles. Kunar still prevailed 6-2, 6-1 over Lucy Adams.

The remaining singles matches were sweeps, including Krzewick’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Isabel LaBaw. Flishenbaum also did likewise in the number three spot against Julia Litwinionek.

Dedaj also picked up her second shutout of the week in defeating Sofia Filardi by the same score.

Two of the three doubles contests were also sweeps for the Falcons. Zubrinsky and Hopstaken easily defeated Stephanie Brown and Nyexi Macias 6-0, 6-0.

The Lancers took a pair of games at second doubles, one in each set. Ballas and Calemmo still made short work of Zuri Alcocer and Frida Valdovinos in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Completing their second sweep of the week, Gustavson and Stranik defeated Audina Agosto and Harleen Singh 6-0, 6-0 at third doubles.

The Falcons, now 9-3 overall, take part in the SWC tournament this week.
