For Bruce and Bob Laskay, Easton’s Union Cemetery is more than a resting place for dearly departed loved ones. It’s also a family legacy.

“Most of my family is resting here,” said Bruce Laskay.

Laskay has dedicated his time to keeping the cemetery presentable for about three years, noting that “100 cars go by daily. It’s an area that should be kept up.”

The cemetery had been in steady decline for years. So with his cousin Bob, Bruce spearheaded an annual volunteer clean-up effort beginning in 2022. Volunteers mow the lawn, weed and trim overgrowth, and help to ensure that headstones remain in good condition.

This year’s clean-up effort is scheduled at the cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m., with a rain date set for Nov. 23.

“Usually a dozen people come. It’s a come as you want,” said Bruce.

In addition to emphasizing the importance of this cleanup-day and his appreciation of those who volunteer from the community, Bruce noted that donations are also welcome to cover upkeep costs, particularly for mowing.

“We’re always looking for help in the form of donations to maintain the cemetery and keep it clean,” he said.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Union Cemetery just off the junction of routes 59 and 136. Participants should come prepared with comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, gloves and any gardening tools they may have.
