On the corner of Center and Westport Roads sits a building built two centuries ago by Samuel Staples to provide children in Easton with an education regardless of financial means.
From 1795 to 1895, the Staples Free School offered Easton children with free private education. The school closed in 1895, but public school classes continued there until the construction of the old Samuel Staples Elementary School in 1930.
Today Staples’ legacy of providing children the means to attend a university or accredited college continues through The Staples Free School Fund, a non profit run by a board of trustees who are Easton residents.
The fund provides scholarships to students who need financial assistance to go to a university, accredited college, or a community college.
“The applications are income-based, so the scholarships are a big help to the families that need it,” said board member Dori Wollen. “Once the kids get the grant, they are required to pay half of it five years after college. Their repayment can continue the cycle of other kids receiving the scholarship once they are ready for college.”
The fund is currently accepting applications for college scholarships for the 2025-26 school year. The deadline for applications is May 9. The average scholarship granted for the 2023-24 school year was $4,000.
Students applying for the scholarship write an essay on why they believe they deserve the money. Some essays come with sad experiences and hardships the students and their families go through day by day.
“You would be amazed at how many sad stories there are in the community,” said Wollen. “It really makes us feel good that we have the ability to help these families out and give them opportunities to send their kids to college without having to worry about their income.”
Applicants must be Easton residents who plan to attend an accredited college, community college or university within the United States. A minimum of five years residency in Easton is required.
Going along with the fund, students also have the chance to be awarded the Anne Lindquist scholarship, which is a $500 addition along with the Staples Free School Fund.
Lindquist, who died after a long battle with cancer, was a beloved member of the Easton community who also served as a member for numerous organizations such as the Easton Public Library committee, the Board of First Baptist Housing in Bridgeport, and the Staples Free School Board.
