Back Yard Beekeepers Offers Virtual Course

Experience the Magic of Honey Bees

New this year, the Back Yark Beekeepers will offer a four-session course virtually via Zoom on Tuesdays, Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25, 2021 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $50 for the class and a one-year membership with BYBA. The location is Zoom. Contact: Leslie Huston at 203- 417-2023 or ljhuston3@charter.net. In the event a session is postponed (power and/or internet outages due to severe weather) Monday, Feb. 1 will be a make-up date.

The course makes a delightfully unique holiday gift! Classes will include instruction on how to assemble the hive, install the bees, inspect the colony, and much more. A brief historical background and some basic biology and hive sociology will be covered, followed by an introduction to the parts of the hive, tools and materials commonly encountered.

Keeping a colony or two of honey bees in your backyard can supply you with plenty of honey for family and friends as well as increase your garden’s productivity, by ensuring adequate pollination. Perhaps just as important, though — as any beekeeper will tell you — is that spending time with these gentle creatures can be a truly gratifying experience: it’s a fascinating, hands-on hobby that engages both the mind and the body. And there is no better way to introduce your children to nature’s wonders than the gentle honey bee!

There will be both lectures and demonstrations and plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Join in and begin to experience the deep satisfaction of working with one of nature’s most amazing creatures!

The Back Yard Beekeepers Association (BYBA), based in Weston CT, has over 250 members. The association has grown to become one of the nation’s largest regional clubs for beekeeping hobbyists. Some of the members are just getting started as beekeepers, and some have enjoyed this hobby for years. All share an interest in the wonderful and remarkable world of the honey bee. The purpose of the BYBA is to provide membership with interesting and practical information about honey bees and the “how-to’s” of beekeeping. The BYBA is a 501 (c)3 non-profit charitable organization. www.backyardbeekeepers.com.
