In 1968, in response to the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., elementary school teacher Jane Elliot conducted an experiment in her classroom. I’m sure many of you have seen the video. If you have not, I highly recommend it. In it, she divides her class by eye color. The results are heartbreaking, and the video is difficult to watch.
This video takes place over fifty years ago, in Iowa, in a small farming town. Many years later, during a lecture on racial equality, Jane Elliot asked her audience a very simple question: “Of all of you white folks, if you are comfortable being treated by society in general the way black folks are treated, please stand up.” Not a single person stood up. (Is anyone surprised?)
We have a choice here, Easton. Now is the time to stand up. Please come and vote on May 4th and continue this fight for racial justice.
