There is now a permanent drug take back site which will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Chief Richard Doyle announced in a department press release. Both prescription and OTC drugs which are expired or no longer needed can be deposited in a secure drop box located at 700 Morehouse Road.
The initiative will safeguard against the serious dangers of keeping unused medications in the home, especially opioid pain medications. Trouble with opioids often starts at home when unused medications fall into the wrong hands, Doyle stated.
Families are urged to eliminate this risk by properly disposing drugs safely. The collected medications will be incinerated at an EPA approved location.
In addition, the police department will continue to participate in the National Drug Take Back Day in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The next scheduled take back collection will be on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 at Samuel Staples Elementary School, 515 Morehouse Road.
