Yellow finch on our feeder
I’ve seen you here before
And you’ll return again tomorrow
Won’t you?
I am dependent, more and more
Come again the tufted titmouse
Sparrow, chickadee
Return sleek, muscled nuthatch,
Crimson cardinal and your brown lady
Robins preening in the birdbath
Doves scratching under shrub
Flickers clinging to the suet
Trees, a backdrop of opening bud
Appears the dogwood’s coat of flowers
Crabapple, cherry, blossoming full
Chill air: slow your springtime hours
And secure this majesty in your power!
Fog and clouds yield heavy raindrops
I’ve seen you here before
You’ll return again tomorrow
Won’t you?
We are dependent on you, more and more
Birds and blossoms, chill and rain
May our springtime life source never stop!
I am taking measure from my window
Less the other shoe to drop
We pray the sun shines mercifully
Upon its varied creatures here
On this blue marble, dependent we
Who fear it’s changed irreversibly
