Thanks to local scout troops and the American Legion Charles L. Ruman Post 160, the graves of Easton veterans buried in two town cemeteries got fresh American flags ahead of the Memorial Day celebrations.

Members from the Girls Scouts, Boy Scout Troop 66 and Cub Scout Pack 166 on May 18 placed new flags on about 120 veterans’ graves at Union and Aspetuck cemeteries.

“A week before Memorial Day we make sure all of the veterans have a fresh American flag so that anybody going to the cemetery will know that is a veteran’s grave,” said Don Rodgerson, commander of Post 160.

Following today’s parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m, and the ceremony at Easton Town Hall, participants will move to Union and Aspetuck cemeteries to remember veterans who are buried there.

Lara Fayek with Cub Scout Pack 166 said it’s been a yearly tradition for scouts to help the American Legion decorate the gravesites of veterans.

Joseph Puchalski, a member of the American Legion Post, said member Michael Ceruzzi dropped the flags off in the morning before heading to distribute Legion Poppies at a local business, his duty for the day.

“Our deepest thanks go out to the scouts for continuing this tradition of honoring departed veterans on Memorial Day,” said Puchalski. “Placing flags at veteran gravesites is a tradition of honoring and remembering those who have passed on after serving their country.”
