To the Editor:

Oscar Hammerstein, the famous lyricist wrote, “You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear; you’ve got to be taught from year to year; it’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear; you’ve got to be carefully taught.”

Those lyrics came to mind recently because for the second time this year, our “Easton Pride” sign was stolen from in front of our property. This time our “Black Lives Matter” sign was also taken. Someone was carefully taught. How sad that this individual is so filled with hate and fear that they cannot tolerate signs that merely display our love of neighbor.

Somewhere along the line they were not taught to respect all individuals. For some reason they are afraid that people of a different race or gender identity might take their jobs or move into their neighborhoods. They are probably the same folks who speak of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with derision.

Last year, we joined with the Easton Library to sponsor a Racial Justice Film Series. Unfortunately, it was not well attended, but those who came were able to see different viewpoints from African American, Native American, and Asian American perspectives. Understanding cannot happen without information.

“You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late, before you are six or seven or eight, to hate all the people your relatives hate. You’ve got to be carefully taught.” What a shame that the folks who stole our signs were not taught with love and acceptance. They do not understand the scriptures that call all people beloved children of God.

I hope and pray that these lessons do not continue to be passed on to the next generation. At Christ Church, we will forgive the thief and pray for their enlightenment. But we will also purchase new signs that proudly display our love of neighbor, whoever they love, wherever they worship, and whatever their skin color.
