The 2024 election is extraordinary in many ways. In Easton, the Republican Town Committee has made the strategic decision to endorse Republican and Independent candidates, knowing that you — the voters — want common sense solutions to our problems.

Our candidates will tackle Connecticut’s affordability crisis in utilities and the cost of living, bring funding back to our district and fight for transparency, accountability, our environment and important social issues.

We are endorsing incumbents Tony Hwang for state Senate and Tony Scott for state House District 112, and Easton’s own Chris Peritore for State House District 135.

Senator Hwang, cross-endorsed by the Connecticut Independent Party, is known for putting people first. A first-generation immigrant, Hwang grew up in federally subsidized housing and has spent his political career working to help our most vulnerable communities. Hwang will push for an overhaul of the “public benefits” portion of our utility bills, ensuring these costs are part of the state budget, not hidden fees. He has voted in favor of women’s reproductive rights and strict gun safety laws, and championed Easton’s watershed issue in the wake of 8-30g mandates. Hwang will continue to deliver for Easton with every vote, testimony and across-the-aisle partnership that has defined his tenure.

Rep. Scott is a skilled leader seeking his third term. Scott is Ranking Member of the Housing Committee and a member of the General Law and the Higher Education & Employment Advancement committees and has brought millions of dollars in grants and funding to the 112th. Scott will continue to fight for more funding in education, public safety and infrastructure, and like Hwang, Scott will tackle high utility bills via a proposal to separate the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and PURA.

Peritore brings a fresh Independent voice. He will represent the values of Easton’s constituents and put people over party. He wants to make it possible to live, work and retire affordably in Easton. He supports more funding for vocational programs and incentives for companies to relocate to Connecticut. Peritore will fight for substantive senior tax relief and lower prescription drug prices, so seniors can comfortably retire in town.

This year, we encourage use of Connecticut’s different voting options – including absentee ballot (where applicable), early voting, and Election Day voting. Increasing participation in our democratic process is a benefit to all. That is why we used the October referendum to distribute a nonpartisan flier with critical voter information.

Our closing note this year is on civility. The RTC embraces diversity of thought and freedom of expression. We believe misinformation around our local elections and candidates is irresponsible and dangerous. We do not publicly target those with whom we disagree; rather, we will stand with anyone who feels their point of view has been silenced or threatened. Civil discourse is non-negotiable.

Easton, if you want to lower your cost of living, control decisions about Easton’s future and support critical social issues, we encourage you to join us and cast your ballots accordingly.
