Ahead of the 2025 state legislative session that starts today, Jan. 8, state Rep. Anne Hughes has been promoted to vice majority whip by house majority leader Jason Rojas.

She also continues in her leadership positions on the Medicare and Medicaid Policy Oversight Council (as subcommittee chair), the Offshore Wind Environmental Standards Commission and with the House Progressive Caucus.

In addition to her leadership appointments, Hughes asked House Leadership for, and received, a fourth committee assignment on the Energy and Technology Committee. The assignment reflects Hughes’ commitment to bringing accountability and transparency to the state’s energy and utility landscape, as well as her championing of the state’s growing renewable energy sector.

“Rep. Hughes’ request to serve on a fourth committee isn’t surprising, as she is a tireless advocate for her district and the state, particularly in the energy arena,” said House Speaker Matt Ritter. “Accommodating her request was an easy decision.”

Hughes is also a returning member to the aging and human services, and labor and public employees committees, where she will continue to seek improved access to affordable healthcare; flexibility in how the state funds its essential services, including special education, universal school meals, a refundable and sustainable child tax credit, and raising provider and Medicaid rates to support the state’s largest Medicaid member community, those in long term care and those with developmental disabilities.

“I am eager in this new era to work with my elected colleagues, our state agencies and our governor, to deliver ratepayer and economic relief to Connecticut families,” said Hughes.

Hughes also cited affordable housing and deeply affordable housing as among the top critical issues this legislative session.

“I am determined to address our spike in homelessness, especially in Fairfield County, where there’s an alarming increase in working parents with children who are living unhoused, and increase in elderly neighbors bereft of housing, due to unaffordable rents and complete shortage of affordable, safe housing with supports for these folks,” she said.

Hughes will also be working with other state legislators across the country “to protect hard-won consumer and small business protections put in place by the Biden administration and challenging corporate monopolies that harm consumers and inflate prices on essential goods and services.”
