To the Editor:
The EMS building needs replacing, but at what cost? Original estimate was $3.7 million. Current estimate is $4.1 million. The building is fundamentally a utilitarian garage with rooms above. There are no high-end finishes like a Westport mansion, no multi-acre property with a pool, etc and yet we’ve somehow managed to design a remodel that costs $585 per square foot if the building is 7,000 square feet.
That is a higher cost than several new-build mansions in Westport for sale presently. How did we get here?? To make an informed decision the voters deserve to know not just the top line number of the proposal but the details. I urge the building committee and selectmen to be as transparent as possible by making the full project proposal and costs available online and in the Courier prior to the Special Town Meeting. Absent a rational explanation this voter is a No on this proposal.
