The Library had chosen “The Incorruptibles” as its 2025 One Book/One Town Community Read title. The book chronicles the rise of organized crime among the Eastern European Jews on the Lower East Side of New York City in the early 1900s.

The New York Post called the book “required reading,” and Amazon selected it as a best book of July. The New York Times called it “unrivaled” and chose it as an editor’s pick. The Wall Street Journal wrote that it’s “a deeply researched and fluidly written corrective to the conventional picture of what life was like on those mean streets.” Other reviews described The Incorruptibles as “beyond compelling,” “a singularly worthy read,” and “popular history at its best.”

The Library chose “The Incorruptibles” as its 2025 One Book/One Town Community Read title.

A graduate of Colgate University, New York Film Academy, and Brooklyn Law School, Slater has written for more than a dozen publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, GQ, and the New Yorker. The New York Times called Wolf Boys,” his last book, “unforgettable,” and the Chicago Public Library named it a best book of the year.

Copies of “The Incorruptibles” will be available for purchase and signing at the March 2 presentation. Multiple copies of the book are currently available for checkout at the Library.
