Eunice Katherine Hanson, aged 89 of Easton, beloved wife of C. Lee Hanson, passed away Monday, April 28, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, CT, with her daughter Kathy by her side. Born on May 8, 1935, to Achileas and Marianthi (Kotarakos) Stylos, she was the eighth born child of eight children. She was predeceased by her loving husband C. Lee Hanson.
On September 11, 2001 (9/11) Eunice lost her beloved son, Peter Burton Hanson, daughter-in-law Sue Kim Hanson, and granddaughter Christine Lee Hanson, who were passengers on United Airlines flight 175. She was also predeceased by her siblings: Olymbiatha (Helen) Straley, Aphrodite (Jenny) Helmar, Anthoula (Ann) Moser, Alexandria (Mary) Mohidin, Dr. Peter Stelos, Panayotis (Paul) Stylos and Dr. Vasili (William) Stylos. She is survived by her daughter Kathryn Lee Barrere and two granddaughters Alexandra Annette Barrere and Nicole Elizabeth Barrere. Active in the aftermath of 9/11, both Eunice and Lee helped establish several endowments in the names of Peter and Sue at their respective universities for lecture series.
For Christine’s legacy, they commissioned a mural in the pediatric exam room at Mass General Hospital. They both worked with town residents to erect the 9/11 memorial in front of the Easton Public Library in memory of all the victims. Throughout her life, Eunice was dedicated to a variety of community services. She was Easton’s Registrar of Voters for over 20 years, she was the Secretary to the Conservation Commission, and Assistant Town Clerk for two years.
In 1988, she was one of the founders of Alpha Home of Bridgeport, a shelter for homeless families. It is now part of the YMCA. She was the President of this organization for 5 years and raised all the funds to support its operations. Eunice was surrounded by a wonderful active circle of friends in Easton. They enjoyed town politics, Saturday dinners, and weekday lunches. Their kindness and support helped Eunice enjoy an active social life.
A memorial service will be held on May 7, at 10:00 a.m., in the Congregational Church of Easton, 336 Westport Road, Easton, CT where we will gather to celebrate Eunice’s life. Friends may greet the family after 9:00 a.m., in the Church.
