Christ Church will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, by hosting a Zoom call at 11 a.m. to read aloud the civil rights leader’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” All are welcome to join the call to listen to the reading and may take turns reading aloud, if they wish. The letter will be shared on screen.

Dr. King wrote the letter in 1963 while jailed in Birmingham, Alabama, in response to eight white clergymen who had publicly criticized his methods. In the letter, he addressed his incarceration, the role of civil disobedience, the injustice of segregation, and laws that denied people of color the same rights and privileges as white citizens. He also appealed to the moral responsibility of clergy and civic leaders to confront racial injustice. The letter is widely regarded as one of Dr. King’s most influential works and a cornerstone of the civil rights movement.
