Music in the Meetinghouse: The West End String Quartet

Music in the Meetinghouse, the concert series of First Church Congregational of Fairfield, Conn., is pleased to announce our next concert, by the West End String Quartet of Hartford. Music of J. S. Bach, John Dowland, and a new work by Connecticut composer and Wesleyan University professor Neely Bruce, in memory of Aymeric Dupré la Tour.
Dupré la Tour, a native of Lyon, France, was Director of Music at First Church from 2012 to 2016, and then served at St. Theresa Church, Trumbull. He died at the age of 49 in a tragic auto accident in May 2022. All are welcome to experience this beautiful music and remember someone who touched our hearts with his playing.
The West End String Quartet came together in 2005 because of their shared passion for chamber music. Since then, WESQ has been entertaining audiences across New England with an exciting and varied repertoire. Members of the quartet teach individually at a variety of institutions and perform in the Hartford, New Haven, Eastern Connecticut, Worcester, and Waterbury Symphony Orchestras.
American composer and performer Neely Bruce is the John Spencer Camp Professor of Music at Wesleyan University. His compositions include three full-length operas; five one-act operas; works for orchestra, chamber orchestra, and wind ensemble; about 300 solo songs; chamber music; electronic music and documentary film scores; and many hours of solo piano music and other keyboard works. Recent major works include Circular 14: The Apotheosis of Aristides, for eight soloists, two choruses and large orchestra. He is currently engaged in a series of seventeen CD-length recitals comprising his complete works for solo piano. Bruce is also a scholar of American music. He is the only pianist to have performed the complete solo vocal music of Charles Ives.
