Calling for Applicants Who Want to Broaden Their Education and Better the Planet
The Back Yard Beekeepers Association (BYBA) announced the third year of the Jeff Shwartz “Be Educated in Entomology Scholarship Fund” for an educational experience. The scholarship is honoring the legacy of Jeff Shwartz, a well-known beekeeper, mentor, local volunteer and member of the Weston-based BYBA club.

Shwartz understood and loved bees and in turn, they loved him. He devoted the last part of his life to educating adults and kids alike about honey bees as well as other insects. Members of the community looked forward to Jeff holding the well-loved bee demonstrations at schools, fairs, and farms. He encouraged children to appreciate bees rather than to fear them.
The scholarship fund is now in its third year. The funds have been used by middle school, high school and college students. Some used the funds to secure transportation to an animal rescue while others have used the funds toward college tuition. Jeff was a supporter of all Earthlings. He loved anything that was living and believed all living things could use help.
“I am happy that this scholarship is still in place,” said Becky Newman from BYBA. “Jeff left his mark on many people and continues with his legacy through this scholarship program. His passing still leaves an emptiness in my heart, knowing that the less loved creatures do not have him standing up for them.”
