REDDING, CT—State Rep. Anne Hughes received the endorsement of the Democratic Party for a second term on Monday during the 135th State Assembly District’s nominating convention.
The convention, usually held in person, was conducted over conference call because of the COVID-19 pandemic That didn’t stop Hughes from expressing her thanks to the delegates and Democratic activists on the call from her residence at the Fiddledale Estate in Easton.
“As your endorsed candidate, I am determined, together, we can build on the progress, work, and collaboration we’ve begun, even through this crisis, we can build an even better community to live, work, raise families, and age well in,” Hughes said. “I am committed to this community, to our can-do state of Connecticut and I am so grateful to all of you for your willingness to show up and work together to get us through this and the challenges ahead. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your nomination.”
Easton First Selectman David Bindelglass was the first to nominate Hughes. The nomination was seconded by Buster Whaley, a graduating senior at Joel Barlow High School from Redding.
Hughes was first elected in 2018, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district in over three decades. In her first term, Hughes played an instrumental role in the passage of Paid Family Medical Leave, an on-time and balanced budget that did not raise tax rates, and other key pieces of legislation that help Connecticut families and seniors.
Hughes is also a social worker at Jewish Senior Services, an activist, seasoned organizational leader and community builder. She represents the 135th Congressional District in the Connecticut General Assembly, which consists of Easton, Weston and part of Redding.
